A REVIEW AND AN ANECDOTE

One fine day after having celebrated the birthday of our dearest friend we four decided to go for a movie. ‘Shutter Island’. But we didn’t go. Because the movie was out. So we decided to ruin our ‘fine’ day. What we did was we decided to see the brand newly released ‘Ravan’ (it wasn’t that bad actually.)

We had made this decision by looking at the appealing posters and lured by the Oscar winning Rehman’s music.

We hurriedly went to the Starcity theatre (sorry istarcity theatre) in matunga. We were eagerly waiting to get inside the theatre (only because we were feeling hot!). After half an hour’s waiting we finally got in! And then started the fun (Oh sorry! I mean The movie). The start was good, everybody was happy. Mesmerizing cinematography, location, background music, etc. And also a little sad because we had to jhelofy Aishwarya…and were cursing the director for chosing her and thinking of the alternatives for her and thinking that the movie is being ruined only because of her. So all 3 of us are engrossed.

After like 20 min it struck me that our 4th friend is quiet so I turned to my left, where he was sitting. What do I see? My friend’s sitting with a constipated face. I ask him “hey dude what happened u alright?” He replies “the story is not moving only!” It’s then that I came out of the hypnotism by the cinematography of the movie and realized the ugly truth. The plot sucked! (Yes there was something worse than Aishwarya). We started getting bored. The remake of RAMAYANA was stuck to the khoj of Sita (played by Ash). NO! actually wait khoj of Ravan (played by Abhishekh) by Rama (played by some south Indian actor) since Ravan is a big time wanted naxalite and Rama a DSP. No it’s the khoj of Sita only. I’m a little confused here… actually… Ram’s searching both of them. Ok confusion solved! Basically we were expecting some nice move in the story line. We started praying for a deviation, a twist. But we were cursed and we had to bear the OVERacting of AB’s baby and NOacting by Aish. (by this I don’t at all mean that she was natural in the movie. Leat me clear this to the Aish lovers.)

Finally our prayers were heard (not by the God but by the story writer) and there came a deviation. It is ‘the reason why Beera name for Ravan is mad at DSP aka Dev names for Ram and why he has kidnapped Raghini name for Sita.(deviation won’t be revealed). Basically we were happy that there came a deviation. And we gave the movie a chance (to get better). But BAD MOVIE it retrieved its stagnancy. Nevertheless, there was a little twist developing. A ray of hope. See! Didn’t I tell you in the beginning that it wasn’t that bad ?

Actually folks I’m pretty sure most of you must have guessed this twist! Yes you are correct friends it’s the same, “Sita is falling in love with Ravan!” Mani Ratnam has really taken hard efforts to make the movie bad! He has used some love advices given in some stupid books that girls fall in love with the boys when they see them dancing. So Ravan’s dancing and Sita who has developed a soft corner from him is seen eyeing him with adoration chalkofying from her eyes. (I now realize that Aish could convey atleast one emotion to the audience. Congrats Aish!)

Oh my God! I missed out something really grave! There does exist a Hanuman, named as Sanjivni (played by Govinda). Another disaster in the movie! He’s the one whose guiding Ram to look for Sita. And for the twist’s sake (or confusion’s sake?) he likes Ravan but then don’t know why ends up helping Ram to find him!!! A little deviation! Sorry to explain the biggest twist of the movie so late… Beera is shown as a good wisher… Ravan is not a devil here but a helper a FARISHTA for the poor so he’s loved by his town people which includes Sanjivni.

So coming back to the plot as everybody knows RAMAYANA Hanuman finally finds Sita. And when he’s having a “discreet” conversation with her he’s caught by the Lankans (Ravan’s companion). And then finally after a lot of talk (actually yelling and screaming in bhojpuri) Ravan agrees to do SAMJHOTA with Ram. Ravan’s younger brother takes the initiative to go and talk with DSP (our Ram). But Ram becomes devil and unnecessarily kills Ravan’s younger brother. (For a change Ravan has a younger brother here instead of Ram). One good thing in the movie! If Govinda was chosen for Hanuman I don’t even want to imagine who would have been Lakshman! So this increases the fury of Ravan. He is provoked to the highest limits. So he decides to revenge the death. Here comes another difference from the original RAMAYANA! Instead of Ram burning Ravan’s Lanka Ravan burns Ram’s jhaat bhar ka camp (sorry for the abusive language!) Ram is not hurt even an ounce because he’s DEV! (Sorry for the sad joke). Lets proceed. There is big action sequence here. WOW! Believe me a competition to Rajnikanth’s movies! (P.S. the sequence will be described only on special requests through e-mail). During the fight Ram falls from the bridge where the two are fighting. (This bridge is like tons and tons of feet high.) Ravan gives his hand to Ram and is holding him and this is exactly when the bridge falls down. Sita shouts! Ravan comes alone on the cliff where Sita is tied up. “DEV KAHA HAI?” isn’t this the question which came to your mind?(Aish asks the SAME question you see!) Or have you already decided that he’s dead now and Ravan’s won the battle? Please don’t jump to conclusions! So to the above question Ravan decides to reply Sita by giving her a surprise. He blindfolds her and goes away. Then comes the surprise taaadaaa Ram is alive. He’s a slow climber so reaches up late. And then yelling in the air a message for Ravan that he’ll come back to kill him Ram takes Sita home.

Wait the were are you moving? Don’t you remember RAMAYANA properly? Sita’s AGNIPARIKSHA is remaining! Ram and Sita going back home in the train. Sita comes and hugs Ram. But Ram gets angry and then doubts her. Fourteen days she was with Ravan did she sleep with him? AGNIPARIKSHA is polygraphy test. Excuse-me! How sick! (I think Ram got a complex by Ravan because he was hotter than him or was he actually portraying his own meantality of what he would have done if he was kidnapped by a girl?) Anyways! Our modern, feminist Sita decides to leave Ram and go to Ravan (Good move girl). She reaches Lanka but Ravan’s not there. None of the Lankans are ready to reveal his hidings. So she finally goes near the valley and screams his name in a really HORRIBLE way. MAGIC! Ravan arrives in less than 1 min. He’s happy to see her. She’s finally all in love with him. NO NO NO they don’t live happily forever. Ram comes na! The AGNIPARIKSHA was a trap setup for Ravan. Finally Ravan is killed. Sita tries to save him but no luck!

NOW YAYYYYY YIPPIE!!!!! THE END

Hey guys wait yaar! This was the review the anecdote is still remaining! (NO we seeing the movie is not the anecdote ok! There is another one.) Sorry but I HAD to tell the story. I wanted to give you the feeling of the sufferings that we went through while watching the movie. Only then will you understand the anecdote.

During the movie as I told initially we appreciated it .But after like 20% of the movie was over we started to show our discontent through various manners. The friend to my left, who complained about the blockage, was sitting with a blank face with his eyes wide open without even blinking them. For a moment I got scared thinking he was dead not being able to bear the crap… but he was just in a trauma. We shook him a little then he was fine. The two friends on my right known for their best laughter started showing it through the laughter. I gave some more chances to the movie, but all I got in return was disappointment. So even I started fidgeting. Started saying nonsensical things laughing, reciting the dialogues before the actors did it as if I had only written them, giggling, etc. All this time the whole theatre was quite except for our noises. Then when the Ravan burns Ram’s camp scene started Ram shot a Lankan and the blood splashed on his bright white t-shirt and these two friend of mine sitting on my right screamed EEEEEEEE….. at the same time. Then SILENCE again. We realized the loudness and were expecting some chuckles and dirty looks but to my surprise people busted out! And we realized everybody in the theatre had mutual feelings. The suppressed agony was unleashed only because of my friends! (I’m proud of you my dears!) And then there were more whispers, and laughter, and giggling which continued till the movie was finally over. So finally the movie ended… by the end all of us were sitting on edge of the chairs to leap out and run towards exit…

To conclude I’ll describe the movie ditto in Ravan’s style: “Chak chak chak chak chak chak chak chak…chakaak.

A bientôt!
